This book was conceived as the first volume in a prefabricated trilogy encompassing material written primarily between the years 1993 and 1999 and edited with an ironic fist into present time.
A combination of various re- & de-generative techniques have been employed to spawn and treat these pages, including an amalgam of existing collage, montage, aleatoric, and algorithmic systems respectively appropriated from the visual, cinematographic, musical, and digital arts.
Structurally, this work is organized via modularism (a term borrowed from theoretical neurolinguistics and neuropsychology), representing an engineering approach to language processing subsystems. Herein, portable prose and moveable type coalesce through non-linear time-slip to form a set of interconnected hypershorts — thematic containers or modules which may themselves be deconstructed, manipulated, and recombined.
To this end, sections of the manuscript utilize dis-assembly language: systematic textual mutilation through proprietary organic and mechanistic processes, computer-aided or otherwise. Although this incorporates the formulaic decompilation and mutation of the written word, human insight is applied to the disassembly procedure by way of syntactical pattern recognition, thus paralleling human creativity in the initial writing process. This output is then re-synthesized and formatted for human readability.
Exploited as a reverse-engineering tool, disassembly language can be used to break through cryptogrammatic barriers and derive the latent, secret data within text, and to subsequently re-assemble these findings into new and innovative constructs with both unique and complementary meaning.
Conceptually, we explore the capacity of linguistic structures to alter states of consciousness and perception; we investigate methods of transcending the printed interface to augment didactic information absorption and illumination; we endeavor to see with fresh eyes.
It must be emphasized that this is not an “automatic novel”. There is nothing arbitrary or uncalculated about the modular placement of elements, nor is this purely an academic exercise. After interminable deliberation, every word is in its place — for the time being.
